I am a big fan of any kind of joke book, and there are some bright spots in Bob's collection, but I found that the material here made me smile more than laugh. Also, I felt that the material could have been arranged better--more cohesively. All in all, a pleasant distraction, but not bust a gut funny.
Buy Now
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6201119267408251963.post-90112854136645072352009-05-25T11:58:00.001-07:002009-05-25T11:58:31.800-07:00Understanding dBASE III Plus (Sybex Computer Books)
This indispensable guide covers both the foundations and the more advanced topics such as command file development, debugging tools, and maximization of efficiency and performance. However, this book is still an excellent one for those who want to learn the ins and outs of Windows systems programming including how your computer can be controlled/manipulated using some assembly language and the operating system as it already exists. Basically, the author is using the subject of viruses to educate you on the fine points of assembly language programming for the PC without you knowing it was ever happening. I highly recommend it. However, as other reviewers have already said, the book is now free online, so don't pay some ridiculously high price believing its contents are a rare find.

This book is written to be accessible to anyone with a little experience with assembly language programming, or to anyone with any programming experience, provided they're willing to do a little work to learn assembler. Actually, this book acts as a pretty good tutorial on assembly language programming itself. The book is broken down into three parts. The first section discusses viral reproduction techniques, ranging from the simplest overwriting virus to complex multi-partite viruses and viruses for advanced operating systems. The second section discusses anti anti-virus techniques commonly used in viruses, including simple techniques to hide file changes, ways to hide virus code from prying eyes, and polymorphism. The third section discusses payloads, both destructive and beneficial. I concur with the other reviewers in that this is the best book ever on the subject (it is likely the only book on the subject from my searches). The first edition of this book is free to download from the publisher's website (search for American Eagle Publications in Google because Amazon.com won't let me put the URL) (it requires you to register but that is free too) along with the Little Black Book of Computer Viruses and lots of other information. THIS BOOK CAN STILL BE PURCHASED NEW FROM THE PUBLISHER'S WEBSITE for forty dollars, so don't order an overpriced used copy from Amazon.com (at the time of this writing, some jerk was trying to sell it for over one hundred dollars used! What a rip-off!).
Buy Now
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6201119267408251963.post-1523887632711666782009-05-25T11:57:00.001-07:002009-05-25T11:57:31.537-07:00New Brutality Film: Race and Affect in Contemporary Hollywood Cinema (Intellect Books - Computers and the History of Art)

The 1990s saw the emergence of a new kind of American cinema, which this book calls the “new-brutality film.” Violence and race have been at the heart of Hollywood cinema since its birth, but the new-brutality film was the first kind of popular American cinema to begin making this relationship explicit. The rise of this cinema coincided with the rebirth of a long-neglected strand of film theory, which seeks to unravel the complex relations of affect between the screen and the viewer.
This book analyses and connects both of these developments, arguing that films like Falling Down, Reservoir Dogs, Se7en, and Strange Days sought to reanimate the affective impact of white Hollywood cinema by miming the power of African-American and particularly hip-hop culture. The book uses several films as case-studies to chart these developments:

• Falling Down both appropriates of the political black rage of the ‘hood film and is a transition point between the white postmodern blockbuster and the new-brutality film.
• Gangsta films like Boyz N the Hood and Menace II Society provided the inspiration for much of the new-brutality film’s mimesis of African-American culture
• The films of Quentin Tarantino (including Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction) are new-brutality films that attempt to reanimate the affective power of Hollywood cinema.
• Se7en, Strange Days, Fight Club, and The Matrix trilogy signify both the development and the demise of the new-brutality film.

This book charts and analyses an important period of Hollywood cinema as well as engaging with key contemporary thinkers (Deleuze, Jameson, Zizek and Benjamin) in a strikingly innovative fashion. The work will appeal to dedicated film scholars, critical theorists and readers with a general interest in film.

Buy Now
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6201119267408251963.post-16079325901969582452009-05-25T11:56:00.002-07:002009-05-25T11:57:01.657-07:00Computer Test Bank With Exam View Book And Cd-rom - Teacher's Edition: Biology - Exploring Life
Computer Test Bank with ExamView CD-ROM assesses student understanding of each content objective in the student text. (Other than Bill himself, that is.) Here's a book full of some of the funniest jabs ever thrown at the software giant. There are the classic forms, such as the light bulb jokes ("Q: How many Microsoft testers does it take to change a light bulb? A: We just notice that the room is dark. We don't fix the problems.") and standard stories. ("Bill Gates dies and sees St. Peter....") There are also riffs on popular culture ("What if Star Trek computers ran on Windows 95?"), spoofs of Microsoft press releases, a clever parody of Microsoft's marketing program written in the C programming language, and the story of Genesis told as if God were running creation on a PC. But Microsoft isn't the only company The Microsloth Joke Book pokes fun at. Intel rouses its share of laughs as well with the company's famous Pentium flaw. The book features a hysterical script based on 2001: A Space Odyssey where HAL runs with a Pentium chip. ("HAL: You must think I'm a fool, Dave. I know that two plus two makes 4.000001. Make that 4.0000001.") Although The Microsloth Joke Book is a slim volume, it's big on laughs.

Customer Review: The second funniest book on Microsoft

This is the second funniest book relating to Microsoft. The anonymous author takes a hacker's view of various systems, focusing on how the system can be cracked and how you can secure the vulnerable areas.
The book makes it clear from the outset that you cannot rely on commercial software for security. Some of it is flawed, and even the best of it has to be used correctly to provide even the most basic security measures. The author scrutinizes such operating systems as Microsoft Windows, Unix, Novell, and Macintosh. He details many of the tools crackers use to attack the system, including several that have legitimate uses for system administration. Rather than merely cataloging areas of risk and showing how various flaws can be exploited, the author makes every effort to show how security holes can be avoided and remedied. Maximum Security tells you which software to avoid and then details which security tools are invaluable, providing the URLs necessary to acquire them. An enclosed CD-ROM provides links to many of the tools and resources discussed in the book. The CD-ROM also leads you to several online documents where you can learn more about Internet security in general and specifics for securing your own site. --Elizabeth Lewis

Customer Review: doesn't age well

The main problem with this book is that it's essentially a series of links to tools. Tools are known to age quickly, and what was a useful took a month ago is now obsolete. By being too tool heavy the book lends itself to the same problem - it quickly becomes dated and useless. Compare this for example to some other textbooks which delve into the underlying principles of crypto, networking, operating systems, etc., and you'll see that this is not a necessary evil.

Customer Review: Comprehensive. but lacks real examples

This book will give a LOT of information about all kinds of networking protocols, Operating Systems, and hardware from the security standpoint. However, it is way too theoretic. There are vurtually no real life examples, no code listings. This may or may not actually be a drawback, because some poeple do not want code in the text they are reading. Well, then this book is for beginners. Either way it does not deserve MY five stars.
Buy Now
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6201119267408251963.post-11485137389016634432009-05-25T11:52:00.000-07:002009-05-25T11:54:21.239-07:00Kids' Computer Creations: Using Your Computer for Art & Craft Fun (Williamson Kids Can Books)Buy Now
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6201119267408251963.post-16528810688620067712009-03-21T21:27:00.000-07:002009-03-21T21:28:08.807-07:00333 Licks, Tricks, and Techniques Every Guitarist Should Know (Book AND DVD formatted for your computer)
Ever wished you could learn practically every lead style, cool tricks, great sounding licks that youll actually use, all the chord scale rules, all the chords youd ever need and much, much more in one book? I love it!

Customer Review: Best Lick Book ever!

I like all the examples and the Tabs since I'm a self taught guitar player. The pictures make learning easy. Some of the tricks I may never use, but it's nice to know how they're done. I can't wait to try some new licks and runs live. I'm sure the audience will be dazzled. Mr. Ihde explores the guitar itself and not just how to play the notes and scales. This book is worth every dime. It's fun and informative. The CD that comes with it is a great asset. I especially liked watching Joe Stump shred. 5 stars.
Buy Now
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6201119267408251963.post-58539087189491789552009-03-21T21:26:00.001-07:002009-03-21T21:26:41.870-07:00Preventing Computer Injury: The Hand Book
Customer Review: Preventing computer injury

This is an excellent "how to" book with numerous illustrations & guides on what NOT to do when using a computer. Written by a professional comedian/computer network administrator/rabbi, JOTD boldly makes fun of the world of computer technology, corporate America, and everything else. With a slant towards UNIX and Solaris, it gives great detail to operating systems to satisfy the most astute nerds, but offers enough broad range to reach anyone in the office world. JOTD is outrageously funny where humor doesn't even seem possible to show itself - deep inside the world of Geekdom. And, JOTD isn't just a compilation of wimpy one-liners, but is a collection of full-length caustic satires, zany scripts, and mature material. And, best of all, JOTD is low in fat and cholesterol.

Customer Review: Not The World's Greatest Computer Joke Book

Does "Jotd" mean "not" in whatever language a rabbi turned Unix Sys Admin speaks? I ask because this is "Not The World's Greatest Computer Joke Book." The book is somewhat funny, but probably won't leave you rolling on the floor laughing (unless perhaps you are Jewish and a Solaris Administrator who's been looking for someone who relates to you). I ordered the book in hopes of finding funny material to use in a Unix class. The content was disappointing to me in that respect. This book of a little over 100 pages with lots of whitespace--and I'm not referring to newlines and tabs--lacks substance. In fairness I must say that I was expecting the book to contain two things: (1) At least some jokes of the format "What's the difference between the Unix MORE command and Michael MOORE?" AND (2) At least a few things that are just hilariously funny. I found neither. The book contains such things as a contrived dialogue between a Unix Systems Administrator and a headhunter (which is more sarcastically realistic than funny), a fake, amusing letter of application for a job, comparisons of Windows NT to Unix (also more true than funny), and some bit about the author's not having had sex (with another person, that is) since 1988. I do have to give the author credit for at least writing and publishing some mildly amusing tidbits and for throwing caution to the wind where political correctness is concerned. I'd rate the book at 3.495 if possible.

Customer Review: Very funny!

This book is definitely one-of-a-kind. I haven't seen any other computer joke books with really technical humor like this one has. It's funny even if you think you've already seen every computer joke in the world twice... I've never seen these jokes anywhere else. I'll definitely be saving a few to retell later.
Buy Now
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6201119267408251963.post-21544258576893338982009-03-21T21:20:00.000-07:002009-03-21T21:21:35.345-07:00Windows Vista and Internet for Children: The Best Book About Computers for Kids Grade 3 and Up (Computer Books for Children)

Engaging and visually pleasing, this computer guide goes beyond chatting and gaming to present practical, step-by-step instructions to teach kids the basics of Windows Vista and the internet, such as how to copy and paste and save files to a hard drive. It contains practical information on buying and taking care of microscopes, plus over 20 step-by-step projects. It includes Internet links. For ages 9 and over.

Customer Review: interensting

I have liked using this book with my 7th grade part-time home-schooled son. It's much more interesting than the school science text on related subjects. The pictures are especially great; probably much prettier than looking at the real thing through a microscope. I would prefer to use a microscope; but since we don't own one, this has been a good visual and informaitonal resource.

Customer Review: This Is The Book.

This book is by far the best microscope book ever. The book has more information than any other microscope book I have seen, and I have seen many! But an added bonus is the book can be further helpful if you have Internet access. On the internet more information can be obtained, making the book even greater.

BUY IT, if you want the best microsope book on the market.
Buy Now
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6201119267408251963.post-5596715718595322222009-03-21T21:13:00.000-07:002009-03-21T21:14:36.347-07:00Principles of Three-Dimensional Computer Animation: Modeling, Rendering, and Animating With 3d Computer Graphics (Norton Books for Architects & Design
The basics of 3D computer animation, updated to reflect the latest advances in animation technology. Retaining the structure and substance of the successful first edition, O'Rourke integrates techniques that have become an accepted part of technology since the book was published. New sections cover advanced modeling, rendering, and animating techniques, including expressions, blended surfaces, environment rendering, animation constraints, volumetric lights, and an expanded description of particle systems. A new chapter on animation production has been added.

Customer Review: Excellent book for intro courses in animation

This book is excellent in giving the reader the "big picture" of foundational knowledge needed to learn technical animation. I strongly suggest using this book in introductory courses that teach technical-based animation, looking at techniques, not creativity.

Customer Review: 3D Newbie Likes It

I'm entirely new to 3D modeling and animation. I found this book to be exceptionally well written. The author provides a clear and concise explanation of the principles of 3D computer graphics, with easy-to-understand examples throughout. As stated in other reviews, it is not software specific. If you are looking for an introductory but thorough 3D primer, I recommend this book without reservation. It should provide a solid foundation for those who have little or no prior computer graphics experience.
Buy Now
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6201119267408251963.post-45873474481297959832009-03-21T21:12:00.000-07:002009-03-21T21:13:23.634-07:00Numerical methods for two-point boundary-value problems (A Blaisdell book in numerical analysis and computer science)
A concise, elementary yet rigorous account of practical numerical methods for solving very general two-point boundary-value problems.
